We always called these "Texas grasshoppers" because they are so large, turns out it's a "Eastern Lubber Grasshopper".

Halictid Bee
One sure sign of summer is all the busy insects. This is a halictid bee, small enough to enjoy the tiny buds of milkweed (butterfly weed). Halictid bees are taking up some of the slack of the endangered honey bee, but their numbers are also in decline.

Blackberry Lily (Belamcanda chinensis)
Lake Dardanelle State Park at Russellville has a lovely garden area across from their Visitor's Center. Someone has spent a great deal of time tending this garden area. I thought this Blackberry Lily was beautiful.

Trumpeter Swan
This is one of two trumpeter swans seen this weekend at the Boxley Valley mill pond on the Buffalo National River in western Newton County.

Great Blue Heron
This great blue heron seemed to be keeping an eye upstream as though waiting for lunch to come washing over the road. Overflowing roadways are a common sight after all the Spring rain.
