The Bear State

Arkansas used to be called the Bear State due to the number of Black Bears that lived here. Unfortunately, we hunted them until there were no more. After a very successful reintroduction, the bear numbers have continued to rise and there is a very healthy population here. Finding one to photograph is still not an easy endeavor, though. After two years of tracking and following leads, I was finally able to get into a situation where I could photograph a wild Arkansas bear from a safe location without him realizing I was there. If he had known I was close by, he would have run away and all I would have gotten was a shot of the north end of a south bound bear.
