Arkansas in White

Winter in Arkansas is many things. Cold, long and sometimes white. Arkansas photographers see a little more in a Arkansas winter. Photographers see beauty in the season. Cold, snow and ice present challenges to a photographer but the reward can be a unique take on a common subject or dramatic beauty in the finer details of winter. Capture Arkansas photographers have captured winter in an amazing light. Settle in with a hot cup of coffee (or tea) and enjoy Arkansas in White through the eyes of Arkansas photographers as hand-picked by our editors.

Stephanie is a gifted portrait photographer. One look at her profile and it's obvious she has an eye for capturing an individual in a frame. Each of her portraits tells a story about its subject. She's also talented in the darkroom (or, digital darkroom), processing her photos in a unique, and beautiful, way.

When looking for a photographer to feature for this winter-themed showcase, Stephanie's diverse collection of winter photography jumped out at us. Many of her portraits are set in winter surroundings. She's also photographed delicate winter details in a beautiful light, like her Frozen Frost photo later on in this showcase.

A big thank you to Stephanie for sharing her talents with us on Capture Arkansas. Check out her Capture Arkansas profile as soon as you possibly can. You'll be happy you did!

Showcased Challenge

EC early morning by Gary Jeffery

Your Best Shot of 2010

As we kicked off a new year in January, we asked Capture Arkansas photographers to look back on 2010 and submit their favorite shot from the year. The response was fantastic. More than 400 photos were submitted to our Best Shot of 2010 challenge.

Submissions crossed all seasons, which made for an interesting voting experience. Our editors were drawn to the magical light captured in Gary Jeffery's photo, above, and awarded it the Editors' Choice award. Voters were delighted with Sandra Millsap's lightning photo as it took the People's Choice award for the challenge.

Showcased Challenge

EC Rose In the Dark by Amanda Brown

Love is in the Air

Turning from January to February, we asked Capture Arkansas photographers to photograph love all around them. Everyone was in the Valentine's Day spirit as submission after submission rolled in featuring something to do with love.

Our editors picked Amanda Brown's dramatic rose shot, above, as the Editors' Choice photo. Voters went in a fun direction, voting for lots of cute animal photos, like the People's Choice award-winner at right.

At the end of February we launched a light-hearted challenge we knew would get some laughs. There's nothing like a funny face to brighten your day as winter stretches on and on.

Joe Rudin's portrait, above, is an instant classic. Have you ever seen a baby make such a face? Our editors didn't hesitate when awarding it the Editors' Choice award. What a great shot!
